Status of Serbian community in Slovenia should be resolved

BELGRADE - Head of the Serbian parliament committee for the diaspora Janko Veselinovic has met with Slovenian officials and pointed out the unresolved status of the Serbian community in that country.

Veselinovic, who visited Slovenia from March 13 to 15, told Tanjug he had had a number o fmeetings with Slovenian officials in order to find a solution for over 40,000 Serbs who lived there, but did not have the status of a national minority.

"During the talks with Slovenian officials, we raised, among other things, the issue of the unsatisfactory stituation concerning Serbian language in schools. It is concerning to know that around 90 percent of Serbian children in secondary schools do not know the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet, and almost 70 percent of them do not speak Serbian,"he noted.

Veselinovic met with European Parliament member Tanja FAjon and thanked her for the assistance in bringing Serbia closer to the EU and for the efforts in improving the relations between Serbia and Slovenia.
