Disunity in the center right
New Democracy did not lose Sundays elections just because of the governments economic policy of austerity, as the battle for the European Parliament saw the conservative party in a state of disunity.
High-profile ND party officials were completely absent in the runup to the polls during a tough campaigning period, while others in the conservative camp chose to throw their support behind smaller parties. There were even those who seemed to relish the idea of a defeat because it would better serve their personal interests.
The battle for governance as well as the political battle was essentially fought by a group of capable young officials who also form a very promising foundation for the partys future.
Of course, the responsibility ultimately lies with the prime minister, who is responsible for creating unity and a collective policy line in the government by the choices he makes for key appointments.
