Exhibition opens at National Library to commemorate WWI

BELGRADE - A visiting exhibition by the National Museum in Krusevac, titled The Bequest of Stevan and Stanislav Binicki, opened on Thursday at the National Library of Serbia in Belgrade as part of the events commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.

The valuable testimony about the lives and work of Stanislav Binicki, one of the most significant representatives of Serbian classical music, and his father Stevan - the less widely known but a no less significant figure, a Serbian military officer and engineer of bridges on the Morava River - is now open to visitors at the National Library.

The exhibition in memory of Stanislav Binicki, a celebrated Serbian composer and conductor who founded the Belgrade Military Orchestra and co-founded the Serbian Music School, was made possible by the Ministry of Culture and Information, National Library of Serbia Acting Director Svetlana Jancic said.

The visiting exhibition is a unique opportunity to highlight the significance of the Binicki bequest and see original scores of Serbian folk songs from 1921.

Also on display are personal documents, family photographs, sheet music and personal items, valuable and authentic material, original manuscripts and the first printed edition of the famous March on the Drina, composed by Stanislav Binicki almost a hundred years ago in honour of Colonel Milivoje Stojanovic, the celebrated commander of the Iron Regiment who died a heroic death in the Battle of Cer in World War I.

The exhibition at the National Library of Serbia ends on September 6.
