Croats Protests Against Violence to Women and Children

Supporters of the anti-domestic violence campaign "Save me" in Croatia protested on Saturday in three cities - Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik - to "show solidarity with victims of violence and demand that the system adequately protect them", it said.

The movement began only two weeks ago with the start of a Facebook group that already counts more than 45,000 members.

The group is not only gathering people to participate in streets protests but also those women who have experienced domestic violence and wish to share those experiences.

Many Croatian celebrities have supported the initiative, including one of the main organizers of the protests, Jelena Veljaca, an actor and screenwriter.

She told BIRN that she had started #spasime, its name in Croatian, "driven by the incredible wave of violence spreading across Croatia".

She said she had been especially shocked by recent violence shown towards children on the island of Pag, where a father threw his children off the family balcony.

Here are the photos from the Zagreb protest.
