Maja Brkan endorsed as nominee for EU General Court judge

Ljubljana – Maja Brkan was endorsed as Slovenia’s nominee for a judge on the General Court of the European Union in a near unanimous vote at the National Assembly on Wednesday. She will now need to pass an assessment by the court’s vetting body to get appointed.

Brkan, an associate professor of EU law at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law, was backed by 78 deputies in the 90-strong Assembly. Six voted against and three ballots were invalid. She needed at least 46 votes to be confirmed.

She now awaits a tough scrutiny before Committee 255, which under the EU treaty vets candidates for the Court of Justice of the EU and the General Court.

The body had rejected two previous Slovenian candidates for the high judicial post in the past two years. As a result, both Slovenian slots on the court are vacant.

Parliamentary parties had expressed strong support for Brkan in consultations with President Borut Pahor, who formally put her forward. The candidate had also been endorsed by the Judicial Council.

Brkan had also received unanimous support from the parliamentary Privileges and Credentials Commission, so there was little debate about her bid at the plenary today.

Pahor congratulated her on her endorsement on Twitter, noting she received a “very convincingly high support” in the secret ballot.
