PSD: President Iohannis must come out of lethargy, solve gov't major crisis

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) says that president Klaus Iohannis must come out of his "several weeks' lethargy" and "quickly" intervene publicly to solve the government's "major" crisis. "The PSD asks the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, to leave the lethargy in which he has been for several weeks and to intervene publicly to resolve the major political crisis in his Government. The president's main constitutional prerogative is to mediate among state powers and among political parties to ensure the stability of the country," a press release from the social democrats, sent to AGERPRES on Thursday, reads. The PSD adds that Romania is at the top of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, "without vacancies in the ICUs, with a record number of deaths, with thousands of chronically ill people left without treatment", and the interim at the Ministry of Health and the protracted political crisis will only make the situation worse. "In this context, the president's lack of public reactions is a serious violation in the exercise of his obligations to the country and society. The PSD recalls that President Iohannis personally endorsed the establishment of this harmful coalition between the PNL [National Liberal Party], USR PLUS [Save Romania Union Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity] and UDMR [Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania], defying the Romanians' vote and the result of the democratic elections. That is why Klaus Iohannis has a direct responsibility for the current political crisis and has an obligation to intervene publicly - quickly - to get out of this deadlock that seriously affects the life and health of Romanian citizens," the PSD release says.AGERPRES(RO - author: Dana Piciu, editor: Claudia Stanescu; EN - author: Maria Voican, editor: Simona Iacob)
