Romania Prime Minister Faces Trial For Corruption

Romania's anti-corruption prosecutors' office, DNA, on Thursday announced that Prime Minister Victor Ponta has been formally indicted for forgery, complicity with tax evasion and money laundering and will stand trial.

Ponta, who became Prime Minister in 2012, allegedly committed the crimes from 2007 through 2011 while working as a lawyer, the DNA added.

Romanian PM "insults all of Hungary" - Hungarian FM

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has "strongly condemned a statement by Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta" for "insulting all of Hungary."

Previously, Ponta said that "Hungarian politicians are no better than those in Syria or Libya, the countries from which people are fleeing."

Refugees seek new routes as Hungary seals border

As Hungary threw up the barriers to stop thousands of refugees trekking over its border from Serbia and into the European Union, undeterred migrants on the roads simply began to think of other routes to take. 

The Hungarian decision might relieve pressure on itself, but  also meant that new countries on the migrants' maps would be drawn into the crisis. 

Serbia-Hungary Migrant Buses 'Diverted to Croatia Border'

Buses which until recently were in charge of bringing migrants from Southern Serbia to the border with Hungary have now been diverted to Croatia, Serbian media outlets report.

B92 radio cites its reporter in Presevo, who was allegedly told by a driver that all migrants should be transported to ?id, a northwestern town in Vojvodida located close to the Croatian border.

Hungary Plan to Extend Border Fence Worries Romania

After reports said that Hungary will soon start preparatory work to extend the border fence along its Serbian frontier eastwards towards Romania, the Romanian Foreign Ministry criticised the development.

"A fence between two EU member states that are also strategic partners is neither politically correct, nor in line with the European spirit," the ministry said on Tuesday.

Hungary to Extend Fence with Serbia to Border with Romania

Hungary plans to extend its razor-wire fence at the border with Serbia as far east as the border with Romania to prevent a potential inflow of migrants along alternative routes after shutting down the main land crossing on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Hungary now building fence on border with Romania

The Hungarian government has decided to start preparatory work to extend a fence the country built on its border with Serbia.

This extension will "go toward Romania," said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Corneliu Vadim Tudor, a politician known for his strongly nationalist and xenophobic views, died of cardiovascular disease in Bucharest on Monday. He was 65.

Justice Minister Robert Cazanciuc said Romania was introducing a simplified citizenship procedure for high-achieving foreigners "with special performances in sports, culture or other areas".

Under the current law, to get Romanian citizenship you must live in the country for at least eight years or be married to a Romanian citizen for at least five years.
