Screening on Chapter 26 starts

BRUSSELS - The screening on Chapter 26 referring to education and culture started in Brussels on Thursday.

The Serbian delegation headed by Srdjan Majstorovic, deputy director of the Serbian government's European Integration Office, comprises numerous experts from the line ministries.

Screening is a process of assessing the alignment of laws and regulations of the candidate countries with the EU acquis.

So far, Serbia has successfully completed the screenings for chapters 23, 24, 32, 2, 35 and 12 on the judiciary and fundamental rights, police, financial control, freedom of movement for workers, the process of normalization of the Belgrade-Pristina ties, and food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy.

Once the screenings for each of the 35 chapters are complete, the European Commission will produce a report that will serve as a basis for European Council decisions on opening individual chapters.

Serbia is expected to open the first chapters in the second half of this year.
