Miljenic: Croatia wants to present truth

THE HAGUE - Croatian Justice Minister Orsat Miljenic said Monday that Croatia wants to show at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) the truth about what really happened during the conflicts on the territory of that country in the 1990s.

We will show what really took place in Croatia by presenting the facts and then let the court make a decision. We will show the truth here, Miljenic said after the first public hearing in a genocide lawsuit between Croatia and Serbia before the UN's top court, during which Croatia gave its oral argument.

Vesna Crnic-Grotic, Croatia's agent to the ICJ, said that Croatia has waived the right to question witnesses proposed by Serbia.

We believe that they cannot substantially affect the evidence through cross-examination, Crnic-Grotic told reporters at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the ICJ. We decided just to take their written statements and let the court assess the evidence, she added.
