Medical University in Pleven Implements 2-nd Da Vinci Robot

The Medical University in Pleven implements a second Da Vinci Surgical System for mini invasive surgery. 

Since the end of March this year the latest generation Da Vinci Si system is performing surgery on patients and is being used for training of surgeons, said the head of the Endoscopic Center of the university, Professor Grigor Gorchev. 

The first Da Vinci robot in Bulgaria was used in 2008, again in the Medical University in Pleven – mostly for gynecologic cancer surgery, but recently the  teams started performing surgery for prostate and colon cancer. 

The new, more advanced robot, will increase the capacity for scientific development, training and treatment of the university and the university hospital in Pleven. 

“This would increase the number of trained specialists in endoscopic surgery in gynecology, urology and gastrointestinal surgery,” said Professor Tomov, Rector of the Medical University in Pleven, at a press conference in Sofia. 

Currently in Pleven work four surgical teams, specialised in working with the Da Vinci robotic system – two in onco gynecology, one in urology and one in general surgery. 

According to Tomov, the hospital has the capacity to perform two robotic surgeries daily. 

According to Professor Gorchev, the implementation of mini invasive surgery has major benefits for the patients, including decreased blood loss, reduced risk of heart attacks and faster post-surgery recovery.
