Nikolic: EU is Serbia's strategic objective

BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said during a meeting he had with Polish Senate Marshal Bogdan Borusewicz on Friday that EU membership is Serbia’s strategic objective.

“We are ready to close chapters in accession negotiations (with the EU) efficiently and quickly so as to make our country a modern and well-organized state,” Nikolic said.

When it comes to the Kosovo-Metohija issue, Nikolic said that Serbia will never recognize independence of its southern province. Serbia has done a lot to stabilize the situation in the province, and I believe that further significant progress is possible if both sides are sincerely committed to achieving it.

The Polish Senate marshal congratulated Nikolic on Serbia’s tenacity and efforts it has made to become a full member of the European Union.

Poland and other European states can see clearly where Serbia is heading, as it sees clearly the efforts made by Serbia’s state authorities to solve economic problems facing the country, Borusewicz said.

Borusewicz is heading a delegation of the Polish Senate on a one-day visit to Serbia.

Before meeting with Nikolic, the delegation visited the Serbian parliament, where Borusewicz met with Speaker Maja Gojkovic.
