Parliament debate on amendments to labour law on Tuesday

BELGRADE - The Serbian parliament will discuss at its Tuesday session the bill of amendments to the labour law which the government adopted on Saturday despite the pressures and protests of trade unions.

Together with other government measures, the amendments to the labour law should contribute to the implementation of fiscal policy measures which aim to help the country overcome the economic crisis and increase economic growth, states the explanation filed together with the government bill.

The adoption of the bill should make room for reduction of black labour market and enhance local and foreign investments in the economy, states the explanation.

In addition to this, the bill of amendments should make room for the creation of legal framework for employment incentives, and special attention will be attached to the categories of population with lower employment prospects, such as people with disabilities and the elderly made redundant in the transition period.

According to the government explanation, the new provisions of the labour law will reduce the unnecessary administrative procedures which do not contribute to protection of employees' rights and safety and which also constitute considerable costs for the employers.

The relationship between the employee and the employer is regulated in keeping with international standards to the best interest of both parties, with the protection of employees as a weaker side in the contractual relationship.

In order to maximise the efficiency of labour law implementation, amendments were also proposed to cover supervision execution, authorised labour inspection and penalty provisions.
