Citizens need to be better informed about EU

BELGRADE - The government's EU Integration Office joined a memorandum of understanding that had been signed by the National Library of Serbia (NBS), Ministry of Culture, EU Delegation to Serbia, Acting Director of the Office Ksenija Milenkovic said on Tuesday.

The cooperation is aimed at ensuring that citizens are well-informed about the European Union in general, Milenkovic said at a meeting titled "Books and Culture as Gates to the EU".

Opinion polls show that citizens are insufficiently informed about how the EU functions and EU membership talks, she noted.

This lack of information leads to citizens being afraid that Serbia's cultural and national identity will be lost or damaged with the EU entry, Milenkovic noted.

The main idea of the EU is multiculturalism, she said, adding that when it becomes an EU member state, Serbian will be one of the official languages of the Union, Cyrillic one of the official scripts.

That is why citizens have to be better informed- in order to counter the fear of consequences of EU entry, Milenkovic said.
