Handke to receive Charter of Honorary Citizen in May

BELGRADE - Austrian writer and humanitarian Peter Handke confirmed his arrival in Belgrade on May 21, when he will be presented with the Charter of Honorary Citizen of Belgrade, City Assembly President Nikola Nikodijevic said.

Handke sent a letter to Nikodijevic to apologize for not being able to attend the charter presentation ceremony which took place on April 17, during the Days of Belgrade, the city administration said.

The initiative to name Handke an honorary citizen of Belgrade came from the Milos Crnjanski Endowment, as a way to thank him for the solidarity he showed the citizens of Belgrade and Serbia in difficult times.

The City Assembly in February this year adopted the decision to award the title of Honorary Citizen of Belgrade to Handke, Russian filmmaker Nikita Mikhalkov and Norwegian politician Thorvald Stoltenberg.
