Sarajevo Film Fest to Show War-Related Films Free Online

Nine feature films and one short film addressing the subjects of conflict and reconciliation will be screened online and at the Meeting Point cinema in the Bosnian capital from April 24-30 as part of the Sarajevo Film Festival's 'Dealing with the Past' programme.

The programme was launched in 2016 with the aim of initiating an honest dialogue about the recent past in the Balkans.

"This is a prerequisite to overcome problems arising from the recent wars in former Yugoslavia, which irreparably marked our societies. In the past five years, we have shared many extremely painful, but inspiring stories from all over the world in this programme," the festival said in a statement.

This year's programme includes the much-praised film by Jasmila Zbanic, 'Quo Vadis, Aida?', about a woman's experience of surviving the Srebrenica genocide in 1995, which has been shortlisted for best international feature film at the 2021 Oscars.

It also includes Croatian film director Dana Budisavljevic's 'The Diary of Diana B.', a documentary-feature about a woman who saved the lives of more than 10,000 children imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II, and 'Srbenka' by Nebojsa Slijepcevic, about a Serb girl called Aleksandra Zec who was killed in Zagreb in 1991.

'The Load' by Ognjen Glavonic is about a Serbian man who receives money to move a truck with a mysterious load from Kosovo to Belgrade during the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, while 'The Painted Bird' by Czech director Vaclav Marhoul is based the novel by Jerzy Kosinski that describes World War II from the perspective of a boy.
