UNHCR Worried about Migrants' Plight at Greece-Macedonia Border

The United Nations refugee agency expressed concern on Friday over the increasingly precarious situation at the border between Greece and Macedonia, where Macedonian police used force earlier to prevent migrants trying to cross.

Bulgaria also announces beefed up border security

The Bulgarian government reacted to the rising migrant crisis faced by Greece by announcing that it is mobilizing its armed forces and police to better protect its borders.
The move followed scenes at the Greek-fYRoM borders hours earlier, as Syrian refugees and other third world migrants were prevented by armed guards from entering the landlocked country to Greece’s north.

Macedonians allow migrants to continue toward Serbia

Macedonian authorities have allowed migrants stranded at the train station in Gevgelija to travel to Serbia, and have provided a special train for this purpose.

Skopje made the decision in agreement with the UNHCR - although they previously intended to send the migrants back to Greece.

Macedonia Police Fires Tear Gas at Refugees

Macedonian police fired tear gas at crowds of refugees on the Greek border on Friday, to deter them from trying to enter the country. Video footage showed at least several refugees were injured.

The previous day the Macedonian government declared a state of emergency on its southern and northern border following an unprecedented influx of refugees.

Serbians advised to stay away from Gevgelija border crossing

The Serbian Foreign Ministry has said it is "not recommending" that Serbians travel via the Gevgelija/Idomeni border crossing between Macedonia and Greece.

This comes as several thousand refugees from the Middle East, stranded at this railroad crossings, on Friday clashed with Macedonian police and soldiers.
