EU plans to involve Serbia in forming Energy Union

BELGRADE - The European Union (EU) is planning to engage Serbia more in setting up a European Energy Union, representative of the EU Delegation to Serbia Freek Janmaat said on Wednesday.

Serbia has been earmarked around EUR 200 million a year from the IPA until 2020 and a considerable part of the funds will go to the energy sector, Janmaat said at a news conference on the Energy Union.

Apart from the IPA, energy projects in the region will have credits of the European Investment Bank at their disposal, he added.

Serbia is dependent on gas imports from Russia, and it would be good for it to ensure other sources of supply, Janmaat said.

He stated that the EU would allocate major funds for building a two-way gas pipeline between Serbia and Bulgaria, an important project for the region's energy security.
