A Bulgarian Love Story that Brought Romance to the 1964 Tokyo Games

SOFIA (Kyodo) -- The morning before the closing ceremony of the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, two young Bulgarian athletes waited nervously in the Athletes' Village of Yoyogi Park.

Expecting only to compete for their country, they had suddenly found themselves about to get married in the world's first wedding to be held inside an Athletes' Village.

Athletics: Romania wins Balkan Championships, with 23 medals

Romania won the top spot in the general ranking of the Balkan Athletics Championships held in Stara Zagora (Bulgaria), with 23 medals, 9 of which were gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze.

Greek followed on the second spot, with 8-9-5 (22 medals) and Serbia ranked 3rd, 8-2-2 (12 medals).

Bulgaria Pays Fine to Lift Weightlifting Doping Ban

Bulgaria's weightlifting federation said on Friday that it had paid a USD 250,000 (EUR 214,000) fine to lift a doping ban on its team competing internationally. The ban was imposed by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) in mid-2015 after Bulgaria's entire team of eleven athletes tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid that stimulates increased muscle tissue.

Alexandra Nacheva became world champion in the triple jump from the athletics championship for U20 years in Tampere. Bulgaria's  16-year-old girl competed with a personal record and best achievement in the world for the year - 14.18 meters. This is the first world title for Bulgaria in this age group since 2006, when Tezjan Naimova triumphed at 100 and 200 meters in Beijing.

Tennis: Four Romanian players among the seeded players at BRD Bucharest Open (WTA)

Not less than four Romanian tennis players are among the seeded players at the BRD Bucharest Open (WTA) tournament, equipped with total prizes worth 226,750 US dollars, to start on Monday on the BNR Arenas in the Capital City: Mihaela Buzarnescu is 2nd seeded, Irina Begu, last edition's winner, is 3rd seeded, Sorana Cirstea is seed no. 5 and Ana Bogdan is seed no. 6.

Ludogorets won the Super Cup of Bulgaria

The champion Ludogorets won the Super Cup of Bulgaria after winning 1:0 over the winner of the Cup of the country Slavia. The match was played at the Trace Arena in Stara Zagora and the only goal scored by the Romanian Claudiu Keseru in the 31st minute  after a combination with Marcelinho.

The Bulgarian national team was excellent at the XXXVth edition of the Balkan Mathematics Olympics (BOM) held in Belgrade between May 7th and 12th.

Slavia Sofia Won the Bulgarian Cup after a 22-year Break

22 years after the last trophy in club history, "Slavia" again won the Bulgarian Cup. In 1996, the "white" won again against Levski in the final, but this time the game was not just played in the regular time, but it came to penalties and the oldest team in Sofia won 4-2.

Bulgaria has Qualified for the Eurovision Finals (Video)

Bulgaria qualified for the final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest. The Equinox song Bones was among the 10 elected from the first semi-final of the competition, which this year is held in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. The five artists forming Equinox include Zhana Bergendorf, Vladimir Mihailov, Georgi Simeonov-JJ, Johnny Manuel and Trey Campbell.

Grigor Dimitrov was Eliminated in Round 2 of the Masters in Madrid

Grigor Dimitrov lost his first match at the Madrid Masters Series in Madrid (€ 6.2m). Bulgaria's best tennis player started from the second round against Milos Raonic (Canada) and lost with 5:7, 6:3, 3:6 after almost two hours of play at the Aranci Sanchez court.

This was the second defeat of a 5 games against the Yugoslav-born Canadian.

Ludogorets is the Champion for the Seventh Consecutive Year!

Ludogorets' team has become champion of Bulgaria for the seventh consecutive year! This happened after today's loss of CSKA Sofia with 1:2 from Botev (Plovdiv). Four rounds before the end of the season the Eagles lead 13 points in front of the Reds and are unreachable at the top of the standings.
