Government supports media freedom and pluralism

BELGRADE - The Serbian government has issued a statement to mark World Press Freedom Day and said it will support media freedom and pluralism.

Freedom of expression is one of the fundamental principles of every democratic society. It can only be achieved in a free environment for the media, and that is why the new government of Serbia will support media freedom and pluralism, the government office for media relations said in the statement.
"Our goal is to create a positive legal environment that respects the role the media play in the society, which is why we are working to adopt three key media laws and a strategy whose adoption and implementation should improve media independence significantly, along with providing stable funding for public TV broadcasters and ensuring government withdrawal from media ownership," Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic pointed out.

Serbia's strategic goal is EU membership, and freedom of expression is one of the cornerstones of the EU, he noted.
