Europe Day celebrations at Messolonghi on May 9

Panos Karvounis, the Head of the Greek Representation of the European Commission said that Greek celebrations of Europe Day on May 9 will take place at Messolonghi, western Greece, however there will also be other events at several Greek cities at different dates. He warned of the danger of euroscepticism and populism threatening Europe making the 65th anniversary of Europe Day, and the message of unity, all the more poignant.

The anniversary celebrates the official presentation by then French foreign minister Robert Schuman of the idea of political collaboration among European countries so as to avert another war, in Paris in 1950. His proposal is considered the precursor of the European Union.

Events marking Europe Day in Greece are organized by the Greek Representation of the European Commission in collaboration with the European Parliament representation in Greece.

Events marking Europe Day will be held in Athens, Thessaloniki, Florina, Ioannina, Herakleion, Kalamata, Karditsa, Lamia, Larissa, Mytilini, Nafplion, Rhodes and Xanthi.
