Vucic: Serbia pursuing independent policy

BELGRADE - Serbia is pursuing an independent policy, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said during a meeting with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran Majid Fahimpour on Monday.

"Serbia is on its path towards the European Union, but it is pursuing an independent policy, which it creates on its own, without interference from any other factor, because that way it protects the interests of its people," the Serbian prime minister noted.

Ambassador Fahimpour briefed the Serbian prime minister on the progress in the talks on the Iranian nuclear programme, welcoming the position of Serbian diplomatic officials on the issue.

Prime Minister Vucic thanked Fahimpour for Iran's principled policy of not recognising the independence of Kosovo-Metohija, unilaterally declared by ethnic Albanians in Serbia's southern province.

The Iranian ambassador sad that the prime minister's wise policy is steering Serbia on a good path, expressing hope that reforms will bring the country great success and progress, the Serbian government's press office said in a statement.

Vucic and Fahimpour agreed that the cooperation between the two countries - economic cooperation in particular - needs to be intensified.

The Serbian prime minister pledged that the Serbian government will in the next ten days appoint a co-chairperson of a joint commission on economic, trade, scientific and technical cooperation at ministerial level.

Vucic and the Iranian ambassador announced that officials of the two countries will exchange visits.
