Football reigns supreme as the planet's top sport

Russia has seen twice as many foreign visitors for the FIFA World Cup this summer, compared to the 2014 Winter Olympics, hosted by the town of Sochi.

The Russian Federation has this summer thus hosted three million foreign visitors for the World Cup 2018 - the planet's top football competition, organized by FIFA once every four years.

The highly coveted title has this year been won by France.

The FIFA World Cup was held in the Russian Federation from June 14 until July 15, and the host cities included Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Rostov, Saransk, and Yekaterinburg.

"It is estimated that more than three million foreign nationals have visited the World Cup host cities and we are sure that the absolute majority has had good impressions. I am confident that this will affect the way our country will be viewed in the world," said Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, according to the agency TASS.
