European People’s Party endorses SDS, NSi

Ljubljana/Medvode – Manfred Weber, chair of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, endorsed the Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi) as he came to Slovenia on Tuesday, just days before the official end of the campaign for Sunday’s general election.

Appearing as a guest of honour at the SDS convention, the party’s final major event of the campaign, Weber said the SDS had friends and partners all over Europe standing by its side. “The whole EPP family is behind you and wishes you all the best.”

Weber highlighted the achievements of the party and Janša in particular, including his trip to Kyiv, which he described as a big step. “Slovenia was leading Europe at that moment, Janez Janša was leading Europe at that moment,” he said.

Weber also praised the country’s presidency of the Council of the EU and the government’s track record over its two-year term, pointing to strong economic growth and low unemployment, and future-oriented spending.

He said his message to Slovenian voters was that “in war time we need stability, we need leaders who know what to do, who have shown that they can manage the country and even Europe in a difficult time.”

Weber delivered a similar message in talks with NSi leader Matej Tonin, who said the country had made “notable progress” under this government in the last two years and had a “positive impact on the lives of the people.”

He highlighted Slovenia as one of the best countries in the EU in terms of infrastructure and digital services, which he said was thanks to effective government, saying that EPP parties were a reliable choice in these unpredictable times.

Tonin said that given the results the government has achieved, it is crucial that it get a new term and complete the projects it started to “focus Slovenia on the future.”
