Israeli Ex-PM Ehud Olmert Sentenced to Six Years for Bribery
Ehud Olmert, Israel's former Prime Minister, was sentenced to 6 years in jail, thus becoming the first head of government in the country to go behind bars.
A fine of ILS 1 M (USD 289 M) was also imposed on him, while another ILS 500 000 (USD 145 M) is to be seized from him, as judge David Rozen ruled according to the Jerusalem Post.
The ruling comes after Olmert was convicted in March over what has become known as the "Holyland affair", a real estate deal he was involved with while being mayor of Jerusalem.
Olmert will appeal his sentence to the Supreme Court and will ask to be freed on bail, according to his lawyer.
His arrest will be delayed until September 1, when his sentence begins.
The defense had initially demanded that the court give him community service, arguing that he could not have a prison sentence longer than 18 months under Israeli law.
