After 22 years at the top of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and the highest state posts occupied after victory over Slobodan Milosevic, Vojislav Kostunica has resigned since his party failed to go over the census in just held parliamentary elections.


- The absolute majority has voted in the election that Serbia takes a path that threatens to turn it into a kind of Washington’s or Brussels’ colony and jeopardize its freedom – Vojislav Kostunica said after submitting his resignation.


He also said that almost a half of voters that have not voted, had indirectly and silently supported this policy based on loudly repeated false promises during an expensive campaign marked by open threats to, frightening and bribing of voters.

Kostunica said it was his duty to submit irrevocable resignation after the DSS ‘has failed to secure seats in the Parliament of Serbia for the first time in the party’s history’. ‘I did everything I could for Serbia’, he said.


According to his words the DSS should keep its political stances for some future time in which ‘unfortunately it shall be far more difficult to both Serbia and its people’ and ‘then the voice of the DSS shall be even more necessary’.


According to some of the DSS officials, Kostunica’s irrevocable resignation should mean definite good-bye to politics by a man who defeated Slobodan Milosevic in elections held on September 24, 2000.
