Stefanovic: Police is backbone of state

BELGRADE - Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic laid a wreath on Sunday at the memorial to Jakov Nenadovic, one of the leaders of the First Serbian Uprising and the minister of internal affairs of Serbia at the beginning of the 19th century, on the occasion of the Day of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Police Day.

Stefanovic was accompanied by Police Director Milorad Veljovic, Interior Ministry heads and state secretaries. Earlier on Sunday, Veljovic laid a wreath at Cukur Fountain.

At a ceremony held at the Ministry of the Interior, Stefanovic said that police is the backbone of a state.
He thanked all members of the ministry for their efforts to safeguard peace, security and safety of the Serbian citizens, reads a statement issued by the Ministry.

Stefanovic expressed expectation that in future, with the help of all members, the reputation of the police will be even better.

Noting that his term of office started with great challenges caused by catastrophic floods which occurred in Serbia, Minister Stefanovic said that the work on the ground has united officials of the Ministry and the police who have demonstrated great professionalism and dedication.
The Day of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Police Day was marked with a ceremony at the Sava Center on Saturday evening.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Police Directorate celebrate the holiday commemorating the year of 1862, when the Serbian Gendarmerie played a crucial role in the conflicts near Belgrade's Cukur Fountain.

Cukur Fountain, the work of Serbian sculptor Simeon Roksandic, was erected in 1931.
