TARTU - Serbia's junior women's volleyball team beat Slovenia 3-2 (25-23 17-25 24-26 25-17 15-12) in the final of the European championship in Estonia and Finland on Sunday and became the European champions.

This was Serbia's fourth attempt at the title, since they lost the finals in 2004, 2010 and 2012.

ALMATY - Serbian men's water polo team claimed the gold medal at the FINA World Cup in Kazakhstan, after a penalty shoot-out win over Hungary 11-9 (1-2, 3-3, 1-1, 2-1, 4-2) in the final match on Sunday.

The team coached by Dejan Savic extended their dominance in the world water polo with the third trophy this summer, after winning the World League and the European Championship.

The top scorer in the Serbian team was Dusan Mandic with two goals, while Strahinja and Viktor Rasovic, Dusan Markovic, Gavril Subotic and Srdjan Vuksanovic scored a goal each.

ALMATY - Serbia beat the United States 11-9 (0-2, 1-4, 3-1, 5-4) in a preliminary round Group A match at the 2014 Men's FINA Water Polo World Cup in Kazakhstan on Thursday.

With this victory, Serbia cemented their first place in the group, after previously beating Montenegro and South Africa.

Stjepanovic through to final of 200 m freestyle

BERLIN - Serbia's Velimir Stjepanovic is through to the final of the 200 m freestyle event at the European Championship in Berlin.

Stjepanovic was 2nd in the second semifinal race with 1:46.79, which is the new national record.

He was second overall in the semifinals, behind world record holder Paul Biedermann with 1:46.69.

The final race is scheduled for Wednesday.

BELGRADE - Serbian high school students won two gold and two bronze medals at the 22nd Balkan Olympiad in Informatics, held from August 10 to 17 in Ankara, Turkey.

The Serbian team won the second place overall at this year's Balkan Olympiad, which gathered a total of 46 participants from 12 countries.

LONDON - Ana Ivanovic's good play in Cincinnati, which saw her through to the final, made Serbia once again the only country with two female tennis players among the top 10 in the world.

The success in Cincinnati also made Ivanovic Serbia's best ranked player, since she is now 9th in the WTA rankings, pushing back her compatriot Jelena Jankovic to 10th spot.

With a performance not on par with her previous matches at the tournament, Ivanovic was incapable of containing her in-form opponent.

CINCINNATI - Serbia's Ana Ivanovic defeated Maria Sharapova 6-2 5-7 7-5 at the Cincinnati Masters on Sunday to reach the final of the tournament.

Her opponent in the match for the title will be Serena Williams from the US, who beat Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark 2-6 6-2 6-4.
