Serbia and NATO: YES OR NO Citizens: We don't want in NATO....but what if we have to?

Official polls show that between 66 and 75 percent of citizens is strongly against Serbia's entering NATO, primarily because of the aggression in 1999.

However, when we asked them is Serbia on the way which leads in NATO, the majority answered "yes".

 

Entering NATO is a topic which was also actualized by former president of Serbia Boris Tadic, who said that Serbia should reconsider even closer cooperation with NATO alliance, maybe even a full membership.

 

In the meantime, official stance of Serbian government remains unchanged - we cooperate with NATO, we even signed Action partnership plan, but we stay neutral.

 

"Blic" asked citizens should Serbia enter NATO. And what do experts say?

 

- Two third of Serbian citizens is strongly against entering NATO, and that opinion remains for years. People can not and will not forget that NATO bombed Serbia in 1999. and killed almost 3.000 people. People will not forget NATO's role in unlawful secession of Kosovo. Also, our last research from 2013. shows that people in the entire Balkan see NATO as a potential factor of destabilization. The question is: what will NATO do to change this impression? - says Katarina Djokic from Belgrade's Centre for security policy.
